Title: Vietnam Turtle Program Coordinator (VNTPC)

The position reports directly to the Director.

About ATP/IMC:

The Asian Turtle Program was established in 1998 and incorporated into the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo/Cleveland Zoological Society’s Asia regional program in 2003. In 2014, ATP merged with the UK-registered charity, Indo-Myanmar Conservation (IMC), to extend the scope of work to include additional taxa during field surveys, and alternative livelihood projects. Since the ATP originated with the development of the Turtle Conservation Centre (TCC) at Cuc Phuong National Park in Vietnam, a key focus has always been on the conservation of tortoises and freshwater turtles (TFT) in Southeast Asia, with an emphasis on Vietnam.

The IMC/ATP aims to establish a safe and sustainable future for Asian turtles and to ensure that no further turtle species become extinct in the region. We implement strategic interventions that directly contribute to the conservation of Asian turtles, helping to ensure efficient use of limited resources, as well as developing capacity, strengthening leadership, and ultimately effecting positive attitudinal and behavioural change within society.

Activities in Vietnam have focused on priority species including critically endangered and endemic species of greatest conservation concern. Projects have focussed on the endemic Vietnamese Pond Turtle (Mauremys annamensis), Bourret’s Box Turtle (Cuora bourreti), Southern Vietnam Box Turtle (Cuora picturata) in central Vietnam, the Big-Headed Turtle (Platysternon megacephalum) and the legendary Hoan Kiem Turtle/Swinhoe’s Softshell Turtle (Rafetus swinhoei) in northern Vietnam. Swinhoe’s Softshell Turtle is largely recognised as the most endangered turtle species in the world.

A broader scope of work, beyond turtles, is brought to the organisation through IMC. This includes surveys for other taxa, protected area surveys, support of laws, legislation and protected area creation, community and media engagement amongst others.

Scope Of Work:

This position is based in Hanoi, coordinating between projects, supporting the Director in Reporting, Fundraising activities, and managing project sites and offices in general with frequent business trips throughout Vietnam and overseas when needed.

Main Responsibilities:

The VNTPC will oversee all aspects of management at the organizational and program levels. The VNTPC’s tasks include but are not limited to the following:

• Supervise IMC/ATP’s project work plans and staff’s work tasks in Vietnam, update and report to the Director
• Supervise research activities and be involved in important field trips.
• Assist the Director in fundraising activities, proposal writing, development of project activities and organization strategy for IMC/ATP
• Support the Office Manager in the preparation of reports for PACCOM
• Support the Director in donor reporting, this will include the preparation and submission of reports
• Responsible for communication with key leaders of government agencies and NGOs
• Build & develop a relationship with government partners and NGOs
• Responsible for important meetings, workshops and media events in Vietnam
• Checking projects monthly and activity reports; directly responsible for IMC/ATP monthly and annual reports.
• Assist junior IMC/ATP staff to support staff training and development.

Selection Criteria:

Requirements:

• Master’s degree in biology conservation or related field
• Good time management and organizational skills
• Minimum of 2-5 years relevant experience in a coordinator/manager role
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, both in English and Vietnamese
• Be able and willing to work well in the field
• High level of motivation, with the ability to remain focused with limited supervision
• Passionate about wildlife conservation

Preferred:

• Knowledge of turtle research and conservation in Vietnam and southeast Asia.
• Ideally proficiency in mapping software such as QGIS and ArcGIS.
• Experience in working with NGOs and government partners.
