Second rescue of turtles from Quang Nam province, central Vietnam

Following last May’s rescue, on Wednesday (15thAugust 2018) our rescue team made another trip to Quang Nam province in central Vietnam follow a confiscation made by the provincial Police Investigation Department. This rescue involved 37 endangered tortoises and freshwater turtles including 18 Keeled Box Turtles (Cuora mouhotii), 1 Big-headed Turtle (Platysternon megacephalum), 2 Impressed Tortoises (Manouria impressa), 14 Bourret’s Box Turtles (Cuora bourreti) and 2 Southern Asian Leaf Turtles (Cyclemys oldhamii).

Unfortunately, two other turtles (1 Big headed-Turtle and 1 Keeled Box Turtle) were too weak and had already died. In addition to the animals transferred to Turtle Conservation Centre (TCC) in Cuc Phuong National Park, the functional agencies of Quang Nam released some animals including softshell turtles back to the wild.

We would like to thank the functional agencies of Quang

Nam Province for their confiscation and timely cooperation to rescue turtles.

ATP NOTE: The confiscations in May and August indicate that the authorities in Quang Nam Province are serious about tackling the illegal wildlife trade in the province. We will also follow this case to see if any prosecutions arise.
