ATP Student Training Course

Since 2005 the Asian Turtle Program (ATP) of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and the Turtle Conservation Center (TCC) of Cuc Phuong National Park annualy hold a Tortoise and Fresh-water Turtle Field Skill Training Course for Vietnamese students, young conservationists and wildlife protection officials.

In the weeklong course participants are provided with practical skills and experience relating to research and conservation of turtles through a combination of classroom instruction and field exercises.

Students learn about the extinction threats facing Asia's turtles, about turtle ecology and how to identify different turtle species native to Vietnam. Participants also aquire practical skills such as handling turtles, measuring and mapping, using GPS, interview methods, aquatic trapping methods and complete practicals both in local communities and the forest.

The course is instructed by ATP members, TCC staff and other professionals. In 2012 a new training module was added on GIS and GPS which was supported by the Institute of Ecology and Biology Resources (IEBR) of Hanoi.

The course is increasingly popular with 82 applicants from over 28 universities and colleges applying in 2011.
Students have continued to go on and participate in conservation and research related to the taxa. They have also effectively contributed to conservation by reporting cases of illegal trade in turtles and transferring animals from the trade to the TCC.

If you would like to participate in the next student training course, please contact the Asian Turtle Program for details and registration.
