Altogether 20 marine fishermen were arrested on the charge of entering turtles' habitat, a prohibited zone, near Gahirmatha marine sanctuary in Kendrapara district, Odisha state, India, official sources reported on Wednesday. Sea patrolling has been stepped up in the Gahirmatha marine sanctuary water territory in preparation for the upcoming mass nesting season of endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea). In order to stop unlawful trawling in the area and ensure the safety of the turtles through joint patrols conducted by the Coast Guard, forest, police and fisheries departments during the turtles' breeding season, said Manoj Kumar Mahapatra, DFO, Rajnagar Mangrove (Wildlife) Forest Division. The sighting of hundreds of carcasses of marine animals on the beach at Paradip last week worried the forest department as in the next couple of months they expect ,Olive Ridley Turtles emerging to Gahirmatha's beaches for 'arribada' (Spanish term for mass egg laying by marine turtles)..
