Training course provides practical field skills for young turtle conservationists in Vietnam

The Asian Turtle Program (ATP) of the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in cooperation with Turtle Conservation Center (TCC) of Cuc Phuong National Park has completed its sixth annual Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Field Skill Training Course for university students and young professionals in Vietnam. The course was held at Cuc Phuong National Park from the 13th to 20th of March 2010 and involved 14 students from 10 universities throughout Vietnam, as well as two rangers from Ba Be National Park and the Da Nang Forest Protection Department.

The course received over 100 applications this year, and has seen a steady increase in interest since it was first run in 2005. Through a combination of classroom instruction and field exercises, participants are provided with practical skills and experience relating to research and conservation of turtles, including conducting interviews in local communities. Students also learned about the extinction threats facing Asia’s turtles, about turtle ecology and how to identify different turtle species native to Vietnam.

The course was instructed by Tim McCormack, coordinator of the ATP, Hoang Van Thai, manager of the Cuc Phuong TCC, Bui Dang Phong, vice director of Cuc Phuong Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center. Four graduates from previous field skills training courses also helped organize and co-lead components of the training.

The ATP tortoise and freshwater turtle field skill training course has been supported by the Taronga Zoo, Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF), as well as the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo (CMZ)
