Wildlife Veterinary seminar for young veterinarians and conservationists in Vietnam

On the 2nd of December 2018, a Wildlife Veterinary Seminar was held with expert national and international guest speakers presenting to over 300 students at the Vietnam National University of Agriculture.  The event was a wonderful opportunity for young students who are interested in becoming veterinarians and conservationists in the future to gain more knowledge on environmental issues and wildlife diseases as well as learning about the work of professional conservationists and conservation NGOs.

During the seminar, the audience heard informative talks from four established veterinarians and conservationists: Dr. Nguyen Ba Tiep, Head of the Department of Anatomy-Histology-Embryology of Vietnam National University of Agriculture, Rafid Shidqi, Project Manager of Thresher Shark Project Indonesia, Dr. Shaun Thomson, Senior Veterinary Surgeon of Animals Asia's Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre, and M.S. Nguyen Tai Thang, Field Officer of Indo Myanmar Conservation’s (IMCs)Asian Turtle Program (ATP). Presenters shared their experiences, difficulties and challenges related to their work. Notably, Thang delivered an interesting speech on his work as a conservationist with a focus on the world’s most endangered turtle, the Swinhoe’s Softshell Turtle (Rafetus swinhoei), best known in Vietnam for the cultural importance of the Hoan Kiem Turtle of this species which used to inhabit central Hanoi’s Hoan Kiem Lake.

A special thanks goes to Vietnam National University of Agriculture as well as Wildhand for organizing such a fantastic event.
