Turtle talk held at

Vietnam Forestry University inspires hundreds of future forest rangers

On the evening of the 1st of November 2015, staff from the Asian Turtle Program (ATP) of Indo Myanmar Conservation (IMC) and Mr Do Thanh Hao of the Turtle Conservation Centre (TCC) of Cuc Phuong National Park were guest speakers at the Vietnam Forestry University, Hanoi.  The 'Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle conservation Workshop' was held by the Green For Future Club, an environmental-oriented student club of the university. The workshop was attended by nearly 400 students from various Faculties within the university with a majority of them studying Environmental and Natural Resource Management. During the three hour long workshop, presentations focused on turtle species of Vietnam, legal protection, the Asian turtle crisis and awareness activities for conservation.  Workshop participants have also been invited to apply to the annual tortoise and fresh-water turtle field training course that will be held in Cuc Phuong National Park during March 2016.

Vietnam Forestry University (VFU) is one of the leading university in Vietnam with expertise in forestry, forest resources management, environment and rural development. Over the years, more than 1,000 masters, 45 doctors, over 10,000 undergraduate students have graduated from VFU, many of them are holding key positions of Vietnam from local to central government. Many of the students attending this workshop will be the future Forest Protection Department (FPD) staff, working as rangers or scientific staff responsible for protecting Vietnam's wildlife.  We hope that by inspiring these young students we can encourage them to support turtle conservationist in the future.

We would love to spend our special thanks to Green For Future Club who organizing this special workshop and Cleveland Metroparks Zoo for supporting this student training activity.
