‘Rua Mua Ban’ arrested. One of Vietnams most active online traders of endangered turtles arrested in Hanoi, Vietnam
A significant breakthrough in the illegal online trade of tortoises and freshwater turtles in Vietnam was made recently. On the 6th of August 2015 the investigation Police Agency of Ha Dong Police, Hanoi, reported that they had arrested and prosecuted Mr Dinh Cong Thanh (born in 1987 in Thai Nguyen province, Vietnam) for violating the provisions stipulated in Article 190 - the Criminal Code of Vietnam on “rare and endangered wildlife protection”.
Earlier, in the evening of the 24th of July 2015, Ha Dong Environmental Police raided Dinh Cong Thanh’s accommodation in Ha Dong district, Hanoi, and found 44 turtles of unknown origin. Of the 44 turtles seized, 8 turtles were identified as Indochinese Box Turtle (Cuora galbinifrons). Thanh confessed that he had been trading turtles online for several months.
ATP NOTE: Mr Dinh Cong Thanh is better known on Facebook as ‘Rua Mua Ban’ (Turtle Buy Sell) and has been active for some years in the illegal selling of protected and endangered turtles.
A total of 44 turtles of 11 species were seized on the 24th of July 2015 (07 native species and 04 exotic species).
