Three arrested in the Philipines for turtle trade

On the 18th of August 2011 three individuals were detained in Manila, the Philippines for wildlife trade. They were caught in the possession of 21 Philippine Pond Turtles (Siebenrockiella leytensis) and 69 hill mynah birds.

The appearance of so many Philippine Pond Turtles in the trade is significant as the species is considered extremely rare with few records and thought only to occur on Palawan Island. Unfortunately this rarity has made the species popular in the illegal pet trade which is where these animals were most likely destined.

The police should be commended on their decisive action in making the arrests and now it is important to confirm these turtles are definitely Philippine Pond Turtles. If so their importance to conservation should become a priority with release or inclusion in a captive assurance colony likely options.
