Build the next generations to protect turtles

To celebrate the World Turtle Day, the Asian Turtle Program held an education program for students in Quang Nam Province, central Vietnam, to learn aboutĀ  turtles and tortoises of Vietnam and how to protect them. The presentation were leaded by officers at Asian Turtle Program and two volunteers from Bio-Environment faculty at Da Nang University. During two days on the 18th and 19th May 2016, 635 students of all 17 classes from grade 6 to 9 at Ly Tu TrongĀ  secondary school, Dien Minh commune, Dien Ban town, Quang Nam province were introduced to the turtle diversity in the world and Vietnam, with a special focus on the endemic Vietnamese pond turtles (Mauremys annamensis), the important role of turtles in the ecosystem as well as human culture. The students all raised their hand in support of saving the uique group of reptiles.

The school program was a part of a conservation projects supported by the Critically Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) to develop a strategy for conservation of important tortoise and freshwater turtle species n Vietnam.
