Hanoi resident hand over an endangered Keeled box turtle (Cuora mouhotii) to give it another chance of a life in the wild

On the 3rd of May 2013, the Asian Turtle Program (ATP) in Hanoi, Vietnam received a phone call from a young woman in the city who wanted t transfer a turtle to the organization. Just 30 minutes after the call she arrived in the office to transfer the animal. ATP staff identified the turtle as a sub-adult endangered Keeled box turtle (Cuora mouhotii) weighing about 200g. The animal seemed active and healthy.

Nguyen Thi Xinh, the girl who transferred the turtle lives in Cau Dien street, Hanoi and had found the turtle after heavy rainfall during the night of the 1 st of May 2013. Apparently the turtle was trying to escape the rain by trying to enter Xinh's house. At first, Xinh was really scared because she thought the turtle might bring bad luck. However, when she calmed down, she walked around her neighborhood to see if anyone locally had lost the animal. When searching on the internet for food for the turtle, she found the Asian Turtle Program website and realized she could hand the animal in to be transferred to the Turtle Conservation Centre (TCC) in Cuc Phuong National Park.

When Miss Xinh dropped off the turtle at the office she said “a few people said that I should keep this turtle as a pet, but I did not really want to keep it because I don't know how to take care of it and I might have harmed it unintentionally”.

The turtle has now been transferred to the TCC and has a chance of being released into the wild in the future, as this species is native to the Cuc Phuong National Park.

This turtle is one of the lucky ones that has been given a second chance. Many others are not so fortunate with trade and consumption in Vietnam being a serious threat to many species for decades. In reset years a growing interest in exotic pets in Vietnam has become an additional threat to such endangered turtles.
