Confiscation of 5 critically endangered Indochinese Box Turtles in northern Vietnam

On the 3rd of May 2017, the Environmental Police Department of Ha Nam province in northern Vietnam confiscated five critically endangered Indochinese Box Turtles (Cuora galbinifrons), one King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah), two Indian cobra (Naja naja), one oriental ratsnake (Ptyas mucosus), and five Chinese ratsnake (Ptyas korros). Apart from the Chinese ratsnake, other turtle and snake species are currently protected under Vietnam national law. Reportedly, the animals were being illegally transported by a man named Vu Van Nghia (resident in Ha Nam province). Nghia could not show any documents of the origins of these animals. He confessed that he was hired to transport them from Nghe An province to Ha Nam province.

On the early morning of the 4th of May, five critically endangered Indochinese Box Turtles have arrived safe and sound at TCC while the snakes have been transferred to the Hanoi Wildlife Rescue Centre where facility and staff are available to rescue them.

We would like to thank Ha Nam Environmental Police and Ha Nam Police for their confiscation and rapid transfer of these animals to the TCC and Hanoi wildlife rescue centre.
