Wildlife Crimes Unit Nabs Turtle Smuggler
Wildlife Conservation Society - Indonesia Program
In mid-July, Indonesian wildlife protection officers from the Wildlife Crimes Unit based in Lampung province (Sumatra) arrested a smuggler heading for Jakarta with 28 turtles. The turtles are reportedly caught in wetlands and swamps in eastern Lampung and moved to Jakarta before being re-shipped to China. The recent trade seizure involved two species; Cyclemys oldhami and Siebenrockiella crassicollis. The Wildlife Crimes Unit is a new special unit supported by WCS comprised of wildlife protection officers, police, and journalists working together with state prosecutors to enforce Indonesian wildlife protection laws and prosecute offenders.
